The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain
The action of this book takes place in 1547. It tells us the story of two boys, very similar in appearance. One is Tom Canty, who lives with his violent father in Offal Court, near Pudding Lane, in London. The other, Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII.
Tom was forced by his father to beg for alms and punished when he didn't get them. And to forget his unhappy life, he liked to play with his friends in the street, playing the role of prince.
That's what took him one day to King Henry VIII's palace. When he saw him, the prince ordered him to enter. It is then that they decide, as a joke, to change their clothes. But the similarity between the two boys was such that the guards ended up expelling the prince from the palace. Edward wanders the city streets, proclaiming himself the true Prince of Wales.
Meanwhile, and despite Tom's attempts to explain what happened, both the court and the king insist that he is the true prince.
Later, Eduardo ends up crossing paths with Tom's family and a band of thieves — part of the story that Mark Twain uses as a criticism of the English justice system.
After the death of Henry VIII, Edward interrupts Tom's coronation ceremony.
The Prince and the Pauper was first published in 1881 in Canada, arriving in the United States only in 1882.
